Fellow pilots, when it comes to changing the settings on your VTx, the future has arrived! On all but the cheapest models DIP switches have gone the way of the dinosaurs and now there’s a technology that makes single buttons and rows of LEDs seem like steam power. SmartAudio is Team BlackSheep’s protocol for communication between and OSD and VTx by using the audio channel. Until recently it was only used by TBS themselves in things like the Core Pro but now support has made it into BetaFlight. What does all this mean to you? Solder up one wire to a spare UART on...

Now we are stocking more and more of the DAL props range, I thought it was about time to outline their slightly cryptic way of naming them. Time to separate the T from the TJ and the BN from the BS! Let's start with the numbers in case you don't already know. Every prop has 4 digits - let's take 5040 as an example. The 50 means it's a 5.0 inch diameter prop whilst the 40 is the pitch of the prop. This means how far the prop would move forward per turn in an ideal world (in a dense fluid...

FrSky has two versions of firmware for its receivers one for the EU and one for the rest of the World. Depending on how old your Taranis is, you may need to change the firmware on your receiver for them to work together. It’s pretty simple to do once you know how, so give me five minutes of your time and you will. The good news is the firmware is easy to get hold of from the FrSky website and you don’t need any special hardware like USB programmers or FTDI adapters. You have everything you need in your Taranis....

The MicroMinim OSD is a great bit of kit for any mini quad. It gives you a really configurable on screen display from something as simple as a voltage readout to a full F-16 fighter pilot artificial horizon ladder. And when you are disarmed on the ground you can even tweak your flight controller settings, saving you lugging your laptop the the field. It's tiny too - about the size of a £1 coin. The trouble is, it has pins and solder pads on all sides so it takes a bit of thought to stop the connections taking up more...

The SPRacingF3Mini board from Mr Cleanflight himself, Dominic Clifton, is a very powerful board with a heap of functions & capabilities.  With great power comes great responsibility complexity and it took me  a while to work out what pins I needed to use to make it do what I wanted. So to save you some time and some head scratching, here's what I did and why. First on my list was the bridge the 5V pins (Number 3 in the diagram). This basically switches all the voltage in pins on the board to become voltage out ones, powered by the...
